Odontobutidae được [[Douglass Fielding Hoese]] và [[Anthony C. Gill]] thiết lập năm 1993 trên cơ sở tách 3 chi ''[[Micropercops]]'', ''[[Odontobutis]]'' và ''[[Perccottus]]'' ra khỏi họ [[Eleotridae]].<ref name=Hoese_Gill1993 /> Ba đặc trưng trạng thái tổ tiên giống với Rhyacichthyidae và là đặc trưng chia sẻ chung bao gồm: đai ngực, vây lưng và hình thái vảy. Mặc dù Hoese và Gill sử dụng đặc trưng bộ xương đuôi – đặc biệt là các sụn ở mặt lưng và mặt bụng phần sau cuống đuôi - như là một đặc trưng quan trọng trong việc thiết lập họ Odontobutidae, nhưng nó chỉ có ở ''Micropercops'', trong khi ở ''Odontobutis'' và ''Perccottus'' thì hình thái học các sụn này là không rõ nét.<ref name = Berra>Tim M. ==Đặc điểm==
Các loài trong họ Odontobutidae thường có cơ thể mập mạp, hình trụ, sống đáy, chủ yếu trong các vùng nước lặng hay chảy chậm ở trung và hạ lưu sông hay ao, hồ. Một số ít loài sống ở vùng thượng lưu các con sông miền núi. Một vài loài có thân hình dẹp bên và là sinh vật trôi (phiêu sinh vật).
