Upeneus là một chi cá biển thuộc họ Cá phèn. Chi này được lập bởi Georges Cuvier vào năm 1829.
Từ nguyên
Tên chi bắt nguồn từ việc viết sai chính tả hoặc dạng Latinh hóa không chính xác của hupḗnē (ὑπήνη, trong tiếng Hy Lạp cổ đại nghĩa là "ria mép"), hàm ý có lẽ đề cập đến những sợi râu dài ở cằm của cá phèn.[1]

Phân bố
Ngoại trừ U. parvus là loài duy nhất có phân bố ở Đại Tây Dương, tất cả các loài còn lại đều được ghi nhận tại vùng Ấn Độ Dương - Thái Bình Dương, riêng U. pori và U. moluccensis còn mở rộng phạm vi đến Địa Trung Hải thông qua kênh đào Suez.
