Heterokonta hay stramenopiles là một dòng chính của sinh vật nhân chuẩn với hơn 100.000 loài được biết đến, hầu hết trong số đó là họ tảo.^[9]

Heterokonta chủ yếu là tảo. Trong một giai đoạn của chu kỳ sống của chúng, chúng có hai lông roi không đồng đều. Chúng bao gồm cả các loại đơn bào và tảo nâu (rong biển như tảo bẹ và Sargassum).^[10]
