Scorpaena là một chi cá biển thuộc họ Cá mù làn. Chi này được lập bởi Carl Linnaeus vào năm 1758.

Từ nguyên

Tên chi được viết là σκόρπαινα trong tiếng Hy Lạp cổ đại, bắt nguồn từ σκορπίος nghĩa là "bọ cạp", cũng là tên Hy Lạp cổ của loài S. scrofa, hàm ý đề cập đến nọc độc từ gai vây lưng của nó có thể gây ra vết thương đau đớn như vết chích của bọ cạp.[2]

Phân bố

Scorpaena có phân bố rộng khắp thế giới, tập trung chủ yếu ở Đại Tây Dương và Đông Thái Bình Dương, thưa thớt hơn ở Tây Thái Bình Dương và không được tìm thấy ở phần lớn Ấn Độ Dương (trừ S. decemradiata ở phía bắc biển Đỏ, S. nasicornua trong vịnh Aden, với 3 loài S. gasta, S. sumptuosa và S. vesperalis ở Tây Úc).

Mô tả chung

Đầu tương đối dẹt ở hầu hết các loài. Xương lệ (lachrymal) có 3–4 ngạnh kéo dài phủ lên xương hàm trên ở cá trưởng thành. Vùng đầu và gáy có rất nhiều gai ngạnh. Vùng chẩm có hố lõm ở phần lớn các loài. Vảy thuộc kiểu vảy lược (ctenoid) hoặc vảy giả tròn (pseudocycloid). Không có bong bóng cá.[3]
